Is Mold Common In The Basement?

Mold can grow anywhere in the home, but it prefers damp, dark places to settle in. Unfortunately, this makes the basement of your home a prime candidate for mold growth.

Is Mold in Your Basement?

Basements are often dark and poorly ventilated, making it all too easy for mold to begin growing. Although mold spores are constantly floating around your home, the real problem starts when these spores find water and are unchecked. Once a mold spore comes in contact with water, it grows along an object’s surface. In an area like the basement, this kind of mold will be identified by a slimy or fuzzy appearance.

Even if your mold growth seems to be contained in the basement, don’t speak too soon. The mold that has its beginning in the basement can easily make its way throughout the rest of your home.

Why is Basement Mold So Common?

However, the question remains, why is mold so common in the basement?

One reason for basement mold growth ties back to the concrete foundation of your home. Poured concrete takes an average of 5 years to dry thoroughly. Concrete is like a sponge, and when left alone, will continuously draw out moisture from its surroundings. This moisture gets spread throughout your home, causing fungus and mold issues in your basement insulation and drywall.

Flooding may also be causing the mold growth in your basement. Depending on where you live, heavy rainfall or melting snow can result in the ground around your home becoming oversaturated.

Water dumped from the roof of your home or downspouts may also cause the earth to become overly wet and muddy. When this happens, water can start to pool around your home’s foundation, eventually leaking into your basement.

Even if the mold in your basement isn’t apparent, your body will let you know. When mold is inhaled, you’ll likely experience respiratory issues and find yourself coughing and wheezing whenever you spend time in the basement.

Other symptoms of mold exposure include nausea, fatigue, eye irritation, and even skin rashes. If you notice that you or a member of your family is suffering from these symptoms, mold could be the culprit.
